Michael Van Orden
Rain gardens

Michael designed and build rain gardens.  Rain gardens are used to control runoff from the garden and filter the water as it is returned to the ground.  The gardens are designed with a deep area in the center with a front berm to contain the water.  Plants are carefully placed in the garden to filter the rain runoff.  Plants in the center of the garden like soil that is more moist, while plants higher on the walls of the garden prefer a drier soil.  This ecology project is important to the overall mission of the garden to promote environmental practices.  The LOC Garden  may be part of the headwaters of Julia's Gulch which empties into Puget Sound.
